Our History

Planting the Seeds of Recovery

United Hospital District has owned and operated Adolescent Treatment Center since 1992.

The original facility was opened in 1982 and located at the site of the former Winnebago Hospital (Winnebago, MN); it was owned and operated by Fountain Centers. Although successful, after ten years the Winnebago facility was marked for closing and the program was to be relocated to Albert Lea.

Prior to closing, the United Hospital District (UHD) agreed to purchase and run the treatment facility. It was initially known as the Adolescent Treatment Center of Winnebago.

In 2010, UHD built a new, state-of-the-art treatment center, which was the first LEED certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) or “green” treatment center in the nation. Services continue there today.

In 2019, the Adolescent Treatment Center expanded its services by moving from providing only substance use services to providing co-occurring services, which allows the program to treat substance use and mental health together.
